NL – ‘The Aeromodeller’, een van Panamarenko’s meest legendarische luchtschepen, bestaat net zoals zijn latere zeppelinprototypes uit drie delen: een ballonvormig drijflichaam, gemaakt van lange aan elkaar gekleefde stroken pvc; een constructie met propellers en motoren voor voortstuwing en besturing; en een gondel, opgevat als ‘woonruimte’, vervaardigd uit een buigzame in het zilver gespoten rietsoort. De naam van het luchtschip ontleende Panamarenko aan een Engels tijdschrift voor modelbouwers en maakte hij officieel met de toevoeging 00-1PL (‘00’ voor de wettelijke identificatie van Belgische vliegtuigen, en ‘1PL’ voor ‘1ste Panamarenko Luchtschip’). Verschillende testvluchten mislukten, als ze al niet verboden werden. In 1972 werd de ontzagwekkende ‘The Aeromodeller’ geëxposeerd op Documenta 5 in Kassel, de tentoonstelling die Panamarenko definitief op de kaart zette van de internationale hedendaagse kunst.
ENG – ‘The Aeromodeller’, one of the most legendary of all Panamarenko’s airships, consists, just like his later zeppelin prototypes, of three parts: a balloon-shaped floating body, made of long strips of PVC glued together; a construction with propellers and engines for propulsion and control; and a gondola, conceived as a ‘living space’, made of flexible reeds sprayed in silver. Panamarenko took the name of the airship from an English magazine for model builders and made it sound official with the addition 00-1PL (‘00’ for the legal identification of Belgian aircraft, and ‘1PL’ for ‘1st Panamarenko Luchtschip’; the Dutch word ‘luchtschip’ translates as ‘airship’). Several test flights failed, if they were not already banned. In 1972, the awe-inspiring ‘The Aeromodeller’ was exhibited at Documenta 5 in Kassel, the exhibition that definitively put Panamarenko on the map of international contemporary art.
FR - ‘The Aeromodeller’, l'un des dirigeables les plus légendaires de Panamarenko, se compose de trois parties, tout comme ses prototypes de zeppelin ultérieurs: un corps flottant en forme de ballon composé de longues bandes de PVC collées ensemble; une construction avec des hélices et des moteurs pour la propulsion et la direction; et une gondole, conçue comme un «espace de vie», fabriquée à partir d'un type flexible de roseau vaporisé d'argent. Panamarenko a emprunté le nom du dirigeable à un magazine anglais pour modélistes et l'a officialisé avec l'ajout 00-1PL («00» pour l'identification légale des aéronefs belges et «1PL» pour le «1st Panamarenko Luchtschip»). Plusieurs vols d'essai ont échoué, s'ils n'étaient pas déjà interdits. En 1972, l'imposant « Aeromodeller » a été exposé à la Documenta 5 à Kassel, l'exposition à laquelle Panamarenko doit sa véritable renommée dans le monde de l'art contemporain international.
