Every first Thursday of the month, S.M.A.K. hosts a late Thursday and the doors stay open until 10:00 pm. Discover our current exhibitions. Afterwards get a fresh ice cream or drink at Crèmerie GUILLAUME.
As part of the exhibition Native Brazil/Alien Brazil by Anna Bella Geiger, sociologist Rolando Vázquez will give a lecture from his research as a decolonial thinker.
Citadelic Jazz is hosting two performances on Late Thursday. At 7pm, internationally renowned guitarist Geoffrey Burton will perform. He has played with Arno, Iggy Pop, Daan, PJDS, The Rhythm Junks and Triggerfinger, among others, and is a full-time member of Hong Kong Dong. He also creates music for theater and soundtracks.
As a solo artist, he pushes aside the traditional genres of 'rock', 'pop' or 'jazz' and explores new directions and possibilities. In 2020, his first solo album 'Me Ta Podia' was released. It is an instrumental record, recorded entirely on guitar, and is deeply rooted in electronic music. Burton uses his guitar as a sound generator, but also as an instrument to compose.
At 21:00, after Rolando Vázquez's lecture, Jeroen van Herzeele will introduce his new quartet. As Jeroen Van Herzeele's music matures, he seems to dig deeper and deeper into the work of John Coltrane. His spiritual and constant search for the fundamentals of music inspires Jeroen endlessly. It is in this spirit that the quartet Jeroen once put together at the request of the late summer Jazz In 't Park festival resides. It is without a doubt an international band that radiates world class.
Fabian Fiorini is an extremely virtuoso and original pianist. His background ranges from classical to jazz and ethnic music. House guitarist Giovanni Barcella calls himself a "drummer-poet." He fills the room with Italian passion and has a big heart for all sincere and contrarian forms of music. Manolo Cabras on bass is the newcomer to the quartet. He has the impossible task of replacing the late master Jean-Jacques Avenel, but undoubtedly carries the idiom and musical skills to be the final piece needed for Jeroen's strong quartet to play on major stages again.
The efficiency and power with which the band plays is impressive. The quartet is less interested in harmony, melody or rhythm, but uses volume, texture, timbre and an interest in sound as a basis for improvisation.
We present the first retrospective exhibition of Anna Bella Geiger, one of the most important Brazilian contemporary artists. The exhibition ends on November 7, so take your chance to make a final visit.
You will see our collection through the eyes of children and young people in The Exhibition The Little Catalogue of the S.M.A.K. Collection. More than 400 children and young people had their say in S.M.A.K. and decided which collection works should be displayed on the entire second floor. With a maze, beanbags and a laboratory!
