Citadelic Jazz invites: Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente

2.Feb.23
Luis Vicente

During Late Thursday, Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente will perform a solo from 21:00.

This autumn, Citadelic invited Rodrigo Amado, a protagonist of Portuguese jazz, for an inspiring concert. Amado is a saxophonist who has regularly topped end-of-year lists!

Now we bring you a trumpeter from the Portuguese (van)garde: Luis Vicente. Up-and-coming talent or already there? See his collaborations with Carlos Zingaro, Akira Sakata, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Paal Nilsen Love, Mette Rasmussen, Luke Stewart, Alexander Hawkins, Valentin and Theo Ceccaldi but also with our local heroes Seppe Gebruers, John Dikeman, Nils Vermeulen... Say no more!

Luís Vicente has been touring constantly for ages. His feverish temperament is already as great as his musicianship. Over the years, he developed a relationship with his trumpet that often referred him to more contemplative and meditative areas. Ideal material for a soloist, enhanced by the continuous dialogue he develops - rather than with other instrumentalists - with himself. With himself but also with the space where he works, opening himself up to the exploration of the acoustic characteristics of space as a fundamental element of discourse.

As he documented in Maré (2020), the solo format allows the trumpeter to pursue melodic sketches and elaborate simple motifs, but also to fall down the rabbit hole of experimentation and devote himself to corresponding expression.

Welcome to a whole new and stimulating world, which you will explore with the musician-magician as your guide without a map!
