On Thursday, April 2, S.M.A.K. is organizing a special Late Thursday to mark the opening of the new exhibition ‘Unearthed Conversation’ by Chilean artists Francisca García and Mario Navarro. Join us for this free opening night and take part in one of the other activities, including a hair salon in the exhibition ‘10 Years of S.M.A.K. Moves’, a panel discussion on the neighborhood and cultural participation, and our monthly introductory tour.
Unearthed Conversation by Chilean artists Francisca García and Mario Navarro focuses on the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. This landscape is shaped by diverse stories: archaeological finds from the ancient Chango culture, similarities with the landscape of Mars, and the scars left behind by Pinochet's dictatorship.
In this pop-up hair salon, run by Walid de Berber and Barber Souly, the barber’s chair becomes a place where people can sit down for a moment. Not just for a haircut, but above all to talk and listen.
Based on their experiences with the Ghent-based initiative Kapsalon Dar, the young people bring a practice of cutting hair, listening, and sharing stories to the museum space.
During the haircuts, intimate conversations arise in which visitors share their stories. In this way, the chair becomes a place of encounter and exchange between visitors and the young people
A guide will take you through the exhibitions that are currently open at S.M.A.K. (Unearthed Conversation will be included in the introductory tours starting in May).
During this panel discussion, moderated by Mert Ali Topkaya and Melis Deveci, we will discuss the needs and offerings in the neighborhood, cultural participation, and the power of community. Speakers will share their insights based on their own experience and expertise, with a special focus on role models from the neighborhood. Together with the audience, we will bring together different perspectives in an open, cross-disciplinary discussion. Because this is a shared story.
