Every first Thursday of the month, S.M.A.K. and the other Ghent museums stay open until 10 p.m. On Thursday, June 5, S.M.A.K. will focus on painting and the exhibition 'Painting After Painting'. Immerse yourself in the exhibition through an introductory or expert-guided tour, try your hand at painting in the Atelier, and end the evening with music by two painters who also express themselves musically.
Marcel Berlanger, painter and professor at the École de Recherches Graphiques (ERG) in Brussels, will guide you through Painting After Painting and offer you a view of contemporary painting through his eyes.
Marcel Berlanger was born in Brussels in 1965, where he lives and works. He studied at the ERG with Joëlle Tuerlinckx and Marthe Wery, among others. His interest in painting and its interaction with the exhibition context led him to Venice under the curatorship of Laurent Jacob and to Rome with Pierre-Olivier Rollin and Frank Maes. His work has led to several major installations, notably at WIELS and Kunstfestivaldesart with Anne Pontegnie. For some years now he has been collaborating with his sister Francoise Berlanger on multidisciplinary creations involving theatre, performance and music, notably at Kunstfestivaldesart, Ars Musica, Spill Festival and numerous theatres. More recently, he has worked with Isabelle Wery on readings and performances. He is represented by Rodolphe Janssen gallery in Brussels.

GRAVAS is a Brussels-based trio built around the texts and compositions of artist Aurélie Gravas, one of the artists in the exhibition Painting After Painting. Together with Françoise Vidick and Marc A. Huyghens, she transforms the hallucinatory visions of her paintings into songs.
Their album GRAVAS was released in March on vinyl and CD by the Belgian label Slouch Hat Records and the French label FRACA.
Aurélie Gravas: guitar, kalimba, vocals
Françoise Vidick: percussion, vocals
Marc Huyghens: guitar, bass, vocals
Starts at 8:30 p.m. in the entrance hall
Free admission
We end the evening with a pre-recorded playlist by Roger3000, the musical alter ego of Brussels-based painter Julien Meert, featured in the exhibition Painting After Painting. His music is strange and melancholic, but also optimistic and naive. A loner, he creates symphonic, abstract miniatures around evolving loops cobbled together from guitar sounds and sprinkled with his whispered lyrics.
Playlist starts at 9:30 p.m. in the entrance hall
Free admission
Finally, we invite you to stop by the Atelier and try painting yourself, guided by artist and S.M.A.K. guide Omar.
