Late Thursday with Joëlle Léandre

On the occasion of her solo exhibition Keep a Promise, Carole Vanderlinden invites renowned double bassist Joëlle Léandre for an improvisation alongside various artworks in the museum galleries.

Carole Vanderlinden and Joëlle Léandre share a deep, mutual appreciation for each other's work. Léandre performed a first improvisation in Vanderlinden's studio in 2024. She drew inspiration for her compositions from several paintings, engaging in a direct dialogue with them. For the compilation of her first monograph Bad Manners (2026), Vanderlinden in turn called upon Léandre. Intrigued by the shared terminology in music and visual arts (such as colors, tone, tonality, movement, and the body), the two artists engaged in a conversation about the connections between both art forms.

"We both want to merge our art further, and we are actively working towards that," Carole Vanderlinden wrote in her monograph about her relationship with Joëlle Léandre. The improvisation at S.M.A.K. aims to make a new contribution to this shared goal.
