From Balder to Raveel and from Broodthaers to Willaert: in the mid-1960s, a new visual language and artistic body of thought developed in the Belgian art world against the backdrop of the rapidly emerging American pop art.
In this lecture, we will discover how pop art served as fertile ground for a whole generation of young artists, but also how our Belgian talents quickly developed their own version and prepared themselves for a future full of minimalist, conceptual and post-modern art. Une petite histoire Belge.
Art historian Carl Jacobs conducted academic research into the reception of pop art in Belgium and was co-curator of the retrospective "Pop Art in Belgium!", ING, (2016). He also produced the book of the same name that accompanied the exhibition. During the lecture, he will shed light on Pop Art as an art movement and will elaborate on the lively interest in Pop Art among Belgian artists, collectors and critics of the time.
