Talk Yung Ma and Karima Boudou about the work of Haegue Yang

18.Jun.23
Cover talk Yung Ma x Karima Boudou

Join Yung Ma, curator at the Hayward Gallery in London and Karima Boudou, S.M.A.K. curator, for a conversation about the work of Haegue Yang on Sunday 18 June 2023 at 3 pm.

This conversation will begin as a reflection on Several Reenactments, Haegue Yang’s first monographic exhibition in Belgium. Curators Yung Ma and Karima Boudou will explore how Yang’s exhibition embraces the notion of recurrence, reflecting the artist’s preoccupation with doubling, mirroring, and reiterating. They will expand on the process of continuous circling of the exhibition that creates a strong inter-contextuality. Acting as a multi-site with a manifold and overlapping structure, the exhibition aims to connect her artworks within the larger fabric of the museum. Her artworks often appear as pairs or interconnected groups, while synchronising the obscure, mysterious, and yet inherently intense qualities of repetition.

Yung Ma and Karima Boudou will further dive into how Yang’s exhibition transcends the ideas of borders, time, and place, creating “a kind of mapping of times and places that are not normally neighbors” that informs the artist’s practice. By dealing with issues of transculturalism and transnationality, they will explain how her artworks are witnesses of several forms of hybridity, rooted in her own process of becoming a diaspora, after migrating from Asia to Europe in the mid-1990s.

Following the conversation, audiences on-site are encouraged to visit Yang’s exhibition on the museum’s first floor and to view an activation of her sculpture Sonic Stone Dance – Angular Circular (2023) in the exhibition space.
