Arts Centre Ten Bogaerde | DACH (works of art from the S.M.A.K. collection), commented by Philippe Van Cauteren
Starting from the specific architecture of the 13th-century abbey farm and the permanent presence of the figurative sculptures by George Grard (1901-'84), the exhibition explores the very diverse manifestations of sculpture from the 1950s to the present. In addition, the exhibition also relates to the surroundings of Koksijde and by extension to today's globalised society and the role that a museum for contemporary art can play in this. The title 'Dach' is therefore not a random choice. Dach', German for roof, was borrowed from a sculpture by the Austrian artist Oswald Oberhuber (1931-2020). In all its simplicity, this extraordinary work illustrates very well what a museum should be, namely a place that offers shelter and protection to artists, works of art and visitors in all openness.
The 'Dach' exhibition is a collaboration between Ten Bogaerde Arts Centre (Koksijde) and S.M.A.K. After 'Ungenau' (De Halle, Geel, 2016) and 'TRUST' (Les Brasseurs, Liège, 2018), this is a new exhibition in which a selection of works from the S.M.A.K. collection is exhibited at an external location.
