Art & Language

Year and place of birth: 1968 Location: British-American artists’ collective whose leading figures were Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden

Art & Language is the name of a collective of predominately British and American artists. The group, whose founding members were Terry Atkinson, David Bainbridge, Michael Baldwin and Harold Hurrel, first came together in May 1968 around the publications issued by the Art & Language Press in Coventry, Great Britain. In the following year, mainly American artists joined, including Joseph Kosuth, Mel Ramsden and Charles Harrison. The group not only created artworks, but also developed a theory of art, and in the 1970s and 80s was of vital importance to the understanding and theoretical underpinning of conceptual art. To this day, their writings are seen as crucial to art theory.
