George Segal

Year and place of birth: 1924, New York, United States Date of death: 2000 , New Jersey, United States

George Segal began his career in the 1950s as a painter of abstract canvases. Soon afterwards, he also began making sculptures. The artist created his first casts of living models in the 1960s. He made the moulds with the aid of plaster casts, which imparted a unique texture on the works. This technique breathed new life into classical sculpture. Due to its allusions to mass culture and popular art, Segal’s oeuvre was categorised as pop art.
