Haim Steinbach is internationally recognised for his practice of ‘selection and arrangement’ of everyday objects. His arrangements question the nature of the space between objects. His practice aligns with the Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO), a philosophy holds that ‘man’ is no longer the sole point of reference, but all ‘objects’ are too. Each ‘object’ exists independently of how man perceives it, with its own autonomous presence and equal value. His work resonates strongly with the foundational questions of Chambres d’Amis*: how context produces meaning, and how the museum as well as the domestic space can function as critical sites of display.
*Chambres d’Amis is the internationally renowned extra muros exhibition organised by Jan Hoet in private homes in Ghent in 1986. It paved the way for two further S.M.A.K. exhibitions held outside the museum’s walls, namely Over The Edges (2000) and TRACK (2012).
