Joseph Kosuth

Year and place of birth: 1945, Toledo (Ohio, VS)

In the 1970s, Joseph Kosuth represented the basic ideas of conceptual art in the most orthodox way. In his publications, he defines this direction as a theoretical investigation into the essence of the concept of art. That is why he does research in his art and uses the medium of language for this, just as Lawrence Weiner demonstrates here in another work. Kosuth uses language as a thinking mechanism and to a lesser extent as a means of communication. His works therefore mainly consist of texts that are visualised by dictionary definitions supplemented by concrete objects and their photographic reproductions.
