Roger Raveel strove to break through the boundaries of the canvas. His intention was to clarify the distinction between painting and reality, and a utopian attempt to bridge this. Nevertheless, abstract forms, such as colour fields and large white squares, continue to occupy an important place on Ravel's canvases. This always creates an ambiguous spatial effect. His oeuvre shows great complexity through the simultaneous use of abstract and figurative factors and through his ambiguous spatial vision.
