1 Step 1:1, 1 M 1:1

NL - ‘1 Step 1:1, 1 M 1:1’ bestaat uit een tafel waarop twee fichebakken staan die elk 1000 steekkaarten bevatten. ‘1 Step’ verwijst naar brouwns voetstap die de kunstenaar als referentiemaat hanteert en die voor hem veel natuurlijker en bevattelijker voelt dan de standaardmaat ‘1 M’. De voet is het lichaamsdeel dat continu in aanraking staat met de grond en de aarde. Hij verbindt de mens met de wereld. ‘1:1’ staat voor schaalverhouding op ware grootte. In de titel van het werk vermeldt brouwn zijn persoonlijke voetstap als maatstaf evenwaardig aan de als – onpersoonlijke – officiële standaard beschouwde ‘meter’. Aan de hand van de fiches kunnen we de door brouwn afgelegde afstanden zelf ‘afleggen’ door de notities één voor één te ‘volgen’ of brouwns voettochten in gedachten te herbeleven. In die zin is ‘1 Step 1:1, 1 M 1:1’ tegelijk zowel abstract als concreet.

ENG - ‘1 Step 1:1, 1 M 1:1’ consists of a table with two open boxes each containing 1000 index cards. ‘1 Step’ refers to brouwn’s footstep, which he uses as a reference measurement and which he feels is much more natural and comprehensible than the standard measurement of ‘1 M’. The foot is the part of the body that is in constant contact with the ground and the earth. It connects man to the world. ‘1:1’ stands for the full scale. In the title of the work brouwn indicates that, as a measure, his own footstep is equal in value to the impersonal ‘metre’ that is officially recognised as the standard. On the basis of his index cards, we can ourselves ‘cover’ the distances brouwn has covered by ‘following’ the notations one by one and thus re-experiencing his walks in our minds. In this sense, ‘1 Step 1:1, 1 M 1:1’ is both abstract and concrete.

FR - ‘1 Step 1:1, 1 M 1:1’ se compose d’un tableau sur lequel se trouvent deux fichiers qui comprennent 1000 fiches chacun. ‘1 Step’ se réfère à un pas de brouwn que l’artiste utilise comme mesure de référence et qui lui semble plus naturel et concret que la mesure standard ‘1 M’. Le pied est la partie du corps qui est en contact continu avec le sol et la terre. Il connecte l’homme au monde. ‘1:1’ représente l’échelle par rapport à la taille réelle. Dans le titre de l’œuvre, brouwn indique son pas personnel en tant qu’échelle équivalente par rapport au ‘mètre’ considéré comme standard officiel – et impersonnel. À l’aide de fiches, nous pouvons ‘parcourir’ nous-même les distances parcourues par brouwn en ‘suivant’ les notes une à une ou en revivant les marches à pied de brouwn en pensée. En ce sens, ‘1 Step 1:1, 1 M 1:1’ est abstrait et concret à la fois.
