NL - Dit schilderij dateert van kort na de oprichting van ‘La Jeune Peinture Belge’. De trapconstructie, die diagonaal door de compositie loopt, werd door Bertrand als uitgangspunt gebruikt om een meer irreële omliggende ruimte te ontplooien. We zien de kunstenaar experimenteren met het gebruik van verschillende ruimtelijke plans, die hij als min of meer evenwaardig in de compositie neerzette. Hij deed dat zonder de band met de realiteit los te laten. De intimistische sfeer van het werk wordt versterkt door de subtiele witte, grijze en okergele tonen. ‘Composition (L’escalier jaune)’ is een duidelijk voorbeeld van de geleidelijke evolutie van figuratie naar abstractie in de naoorlogse Belgische schilderkunst.
ENG - This painting dates from shortly after the foundation of ‘La Jeune Peinture Belge’. The staircase construction, which runs diagonally through the composition, was used by Bernard as a starting point from which to unfold a more imaginary surrounding space. We see the artist experimenting with the use of various spatial planes, which he inserts into the composition as more or less equivalent. He did this without relinquishing the link with reality. The intimate atmosphere of the work is heightened by the subtle white, grey and ochre tones. ‘Composition (The yellow staircase)’ is a clear example of the gradual evolution from figuration to abstraction in post-war Belgian art.
FR - Cette peinture fut réalisée peu de temps après la création de ‘La Jeune Peinture Belge’. Bertrand a utilisé la construction en escalier, qui traverse la composition en diagonale, comme point de départ pour développer un espace environnant plus irréel. Nous voyons que l’artiste expérimente l’utilisation de différents plans spatiaux, qu’il a reproduit de façon plus ou moins équivalente dans la composition. Ce qu’il fit sans renoncer au lien avec la réalité. L’ambiance intimiste de l’oeuvre est renforcée par les subtils tons blancs, gris et jaune ocre. ‘Composition (L’escalier jaune)’ est un exemple évident de l’évolution progressive de la figuration vers l’abstraction dans la peinture belge d’après-guerre.
