Following The Right Hand of Doris Day In 'Young Man With a Horn'

NL – Voor zijn reeks ‘Following the Right Hand of …’ volgde Bismuth telkens dezelfde procedure: hij koos een scène uit een filmklassieker, focuste zich op de al even iconische actrice in de hoofdrol, en volgde de bewegingen van haar rechterhand met een zwarte alcoholstift op plexiglas. Achter de resulterende, Jackson Pollock-achtige tekeningen plaatste Bismuth telkens een filmstill van de scène in kwestie. Op deze manier saboteerde hij het ‘esthetische’ filmbeeld en legde hij letterlijk verborgen codes uit de klassieke Hollywoodcinema bloot.

ENG – In each of the series entitled ‘Following the Right Hand of…’, Bismuth kept to the same procedure: he chose a scene from a classic film, focused on the equally iconic actress in the leading part, and followed the movements of her right hand using a black felt pen on Perspex. He then put a film still from the relevant scene behind the Pollock-like drawings. In this way he sabotaged the ‘aesthetic’ film image and in a literal sense exposed the hidden codes of classic Hollywood films.

FR - Pour sa série ‘Following the Right Hand of …’, Bismuth a suivi chaque fois la même procédure: il choisissait une scène d’un classique du cinéma, se concentrait sur l’actrice iconique qui jouait le rôle principal et suivait les mouvements de sa main droite avec un crayon noir sur du plexiglas. Bismuth plaçait chaque fois une pause de la scène en question derrière les dessins à la façon de Jackson Pollock qui en résultaient. Il sabotait ainsi la prise de vue ‘esthétique’ et révélait littéralement les codes cachés du cinéma classique d’Hollywood.
