Magical World

NL – Voor deze video werkte Billing samen met kinderen uit een muziekklas in Dubrava, een voorstad van Zagreb. In een afgeleefd cultureel centrum repeteren de kinderen het melancholische ‘Magical World’, een protestpopsong uit 1968 van singer-songwriter Sidney Barnes. Het thema van de songtekst, verandering, staat symbool voor het veranderende Kroatië, dat zich als relatief jonge lidstaat probeert aan te passen aan de eisen en normen van de Europese Unie, en dat tegelijk een (nog fragiele) nationale identiteit zoekt te ontwikkelen. Deze worsteling wordt metaforisch in beeld gebracht door de kinderen, die zichtbaar moeite hebben met het zich eigen maken van de Engelse tekst.

ENG – For this video, Billing worked with children from a music class in Dubrava, a suburb of Zagreb. In a dilapidated cultural centre, the children rehearse the melancholy 'Magical World', a 1968 protest pop song by singer-songwriter Sidney Barnes. The theme of the lyrics – change - symbolizes the changing Croatia which, as a relatively young member state, tries to adapt to the demands and norms of the European Union, while at the same time seeking to develop a (still fragile) national identity. This struggle is portrayed metaphorically by the children, who have visible difficulty to grasp the English text.

FR - Pour réaliser cette vidéo, Billing collabora avec des enfants d’une classe de musique de Dubrava, un faubourg de Zagreb. Les enfants répètent dans un centre culturel délabré la ‘Magical World’ mélancolique, chanson pop de protestation de 1968 du chanteur- compositeur Sidney Barnes. Le thème du texte de la chanson – le changement – symbolise la Croatie en mutation, état membre relativement jeune qui tente de s’adapter aux exigences et aux normes de l’Union européenne et qui cherche aussi à développer une identité nationale (encore fragile). Cette lutte est présentée comme une métaphore par les enfants qui ont visiblement du mal à s’approprier le texte en anglais.
