P.I.G. (Piece in Ghent)

NL - ‘P.I.G. (Piece in Ghent)’ is Jason Rhoades’ associatieve en humoristische interpretatie van het ‘Lam Gods’, het beroemde altaarstuk van de gebroeders Van Eyck dat zich in Gent bevindt en dat in 2020, het Van Eyck-jaar, uitgebreid in de kijker wordt gezet. Voor ‘P.I.G.’ startte Rhoades met het opstellen van een strakke scenografie, met daarin een paginalange opsomming van bestaande en eigenhandig te maken voorwerpen. Deze koppelde hij aan motieven uit het middeleeuwse schilderstuk en doordrenkte ze zo stuk voor stuk met betekenis. De linken zijn zowel formeel, narratief als allegorisch. Rhoades daagt ons uit om op onze beurt verbanden te leggen. Zo is het duivenhokje in de installatie een verwijzing naar de duif – de Heilige Geest – in het Lam Gods, het schaapsvel een verwijzing naar het Lam en de whirlpool een verwijzing naar de heilige fontein.

(Piece in Ghent)’ is Jason Rhoades’ associative and humorous interpretation of ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’, the famous altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers housed in Ghent and set to be placed firmly in the spotlight in 2020, the Van Eyck year. For ‘P.I.G.’, Rhoades began to design a strict scenography, which included a page-long summary of existing objects and those to be made by hand. He linked these to motifs from the medieval painting, thereby imbuing the items with meaning. The links are formal, narrative or allegorical. Rhoades challenges us, in turn, to make connections. For example, the dovecot in the installation is an allusion to the dove – the Holy Spirit – in ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’, the sheepskin is a reference to the Lamb, and the whirlpool an allusion to the holy fountain.

FR - ‘P.I.G. (Piece in Ghent)’ est l’interprétation associative et humoristique de ‘l’Agneau de Dieu’, le célèbre retable des frères Van Eyck qui se trouve à Gand et qui bénéficiera d’une attention particulière en 2020, année Van Eyck. Pour ‘P.I.G.’, Rhoades a commencé par établir une scénographie rigide, comprenant une énumération sur plusieurs pages d’objets existants et à réaliser de sa main. Il les associa à des motifs de la peinture moyenâgeuse et les imprégna chaque fois de signification. Les liens sont tant formels, narratifs qu’allégoriques. Rhoades nous met au défi d’établir des liens à notre tour. C’est ainsi que le pigeonnier dans l’installation évoque le pigeon – le Saint-Esprit – de l’Agneau de Dieu, la peau de mouton évoque l’Agneau et le jacuzzi est une référence à la sainte fontaine.
