Stoney Scrabble at Bastardstown

NL - ‘Stoney Scrabble at Bastardstown’ verenigt een aantal typische thema’s van Orla Barry’s oeuvre: taal en de (on)mogelijkheid tot communicatie, eenzaamheid en vervreemding van de natuur. Dit werk toont willekeurig geschikte foto’s van woorden op een raam dat doet denken aan de leesplanken waarmee kinderen leren lezen. De woorden zelf zijn archetypisch en dikwijls ook emotief geladen. Ze werden met steentjes in het zand gelegd op het strand van Bastardstown, een dorpje in het Ierse graafschap Wexford waar Barry woont. De willekeurige woordschikking verwijst naar ons onvermogen om ons niet-lineaire denken in taal om te zetten. De eenzaamheid die hiermee soms gepaard gaat, wordt gevisualiseerd door de steentjes op het strand. De installatie nodigt uit om onze verbeelding, die eerder beeldend dan talig is, te kanaliseren met behulp van het beperkte aantal aangereikte woorden.

ENG - ‘Stoney Scrabble at Bastardstown’ unites a number of typical themes in Orla Barry’s oeuvre: language and the (im)possibility of communication, loneliness and alienation from nature. This work shows randomly arranged pictures of words on a window and recalls the boards with text and images that help children learn to read. The words themselves are archetypical and often emotionally charged. They were created with pebbles in the sand on the beach at Bastardstown, a village in the Irish county of Wexford where Barry lives. The random arrangement of words refers to our inability to translate non-linear thinking into language. The loneliness that sometimes accompanies this is visualised by the pebbles on the beach. The installation invites us to channel our imagination, which is visual rather than linguistic, using the limited number of words provided.

FR - ‘Stoney Scrabble at Bastardstown’ réunit quelques thèmes typiques de l’œuvre d’Orla Barry: le langage et la (l’im)possibilité de communication, le solitude et la distanciation par rapport à la nature. Cette œuvre montre des photos de mots disposés de manière arbitraire sur une fenêtre qui évoque les tablettes de lecture permettant aux enfants à apprendre à lire. Les mots en eux-mêmes sont archétypiques et ont souvent une connotation émotive. Ils ont été placés dans le sable avec des cailloux sur la plage de Bastardstown, un petit village du comté irlandais de Wexford où habite Barry. La disposition arbitraire des mots évoque l’incapacité de l’homme à convertir sa pensée non-linéaire en langage. Les cailloux sur la plage visualisent la solitude à laquelle elle est parfois associée. L’installation nous invite à canaliser notre imagination, qui tient plus de l’image que du langage, à l’aide du nombre limité de mots proposés.
