NL – 'The Big Castrator' is bruut. Een donkere hand houdt een gekromde dolk in de aanslag en daaroverheen staan de bordeauxrode blokletters van de titel. Een gebalde agressie spat van het kleine schilderij. De kunstenaar dacht spontaan 'the big castrator' toen hij in een oude publicatie over anatomie een sterk belichte foto zag van een hand die een dolk vastklemt. Het deed hem denken aan een beeld uit een film. Cinema en schilderkunst liggen voor Van Imschoot dicht bij elkaar. Hij schilderde dit werk als ware het het begin van een film. Een Hitchcockiaanse thriller of een rolprent van Tarantino of Spike Lee bijvoorbeeld. Wat er zich in de imaginaire film afspeelt, kunnen we zelf invullen. Jan Van Imschoot onthult: “In mijn hoofd gaat het over een persoon die wraak neemt op verkrachters en andere seksuele delinquenten. 'The Big Castrator' is een steunbetuiging aan alle slachtoffers van seksuele delicten.”
ENG – ‘The Big Castrator’ is raw. A dark hand holds a curved dagger as if to attack. Up above, the title is written in burgundy capital letters. The small painting is full of pent-up aggression. The artist spontaneously thought of ‘the big castrator’ when, in an old publication on anatomy, he saw an over-exposed photograph of a hand clasping a dagger. It reminded him of a film still. Cinema and painting are not so very different for Van Imschoot. He painted this work as if it were the beginning of a film. A Hitchcockian thriller, for example, or a movie by Tarantino or Spike Lee. We are left to imagine how the story unfolds. Jan Van Imschoot reveals: “In my own mind, it’s about a person who takes revenge on rapists and other sex offenders. ‘The Big Castrator’ is a declaration of support for all victims of sexual offences.”
FR - 'The Big Castrator' est brut. Une main sombre tient un poignard courbé. L’image est recouverte par le titre en majuscules bordeaux. Une agression menaçante jaillit du petit tableau. L’artiste pensait spontanément à ‘the big castrator’ en voyant, dans une ancienne publication sur l’anatomie, une photo fortement illuminée d’une main qui serre un poignard. Cela le faisait penser à une image dans un film. Pour Van Imschoot, le cinéma et la peinture sont très proches. Il a peint ce tableau comme si c’était le début d’un film. Un thriller à la Hitchcock ou un film de Tarantino ou Spike Lee, par exemple. Nous pouvons compléter nous-mêmes ce qui se déroule dans ce film imaginaire. Jan Van Imschoot nous révèle: “Dans ma tête, il s’agit d’une personne qui se venge de violeurs et d’autres délinquants sexuels. ‘The Big Castrator’ est un témoignage de soutien à toutes les victimes de délits sexuels.”
