Under the heading FAKE?, the tenth Heritage Day (Erfgoeddag 25th April 2010) will balance on the narrow line between appearance, illusion and reality.

The S.M.A.K. will be showing a selection from its collection and thereby tries to formulate a contemporary response to the constant presence of semblance and illusion in our reality. Erfgoeddag focuses on falsification, clever forgers, scientific analyses that have led to their unmasking, and so on. The S.M.A.K. offers this response on the basis of its own frame of reference. What does ‘reality’ mean in the context of a museum? How can contemporary artists interpret ‘reality’ and translate it into an ‘image’? There is no image, whether it is a painting, a sculpture, a video or a photo, that can depict reality as it actually is. In other words, every image is a ‘falsification’ of reality, or to put it a little more kindly, an ‘interpretation’ of reality. In this sense, the choice made from the collection should also be seen as an interpretation of the FAKE theme. The artists include Carsten Höller , Marcel Broodthaers, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Vik Muniz, Tetsumi Kudo, Piero Gilardi, Johannes Kahrs, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Wim Delvoye, Mimmo Rottela en Costas Tsoclis.
