Since 2004 the S.M.A.K. has participated in the European joint venture on ‘the preventive conservation and presentation of installation art’.

Five works from the museum’s collection have been subjected to thorough examination with an eye to preservation, good documentation and re-installation in the long term.

One of these works is Joelle Tuerlinckx’ installation Un ensemble autour du MUR. This Belgian artist starts out from the experiences and relationships she has with a particular space. She makes use of what is there and borrows certain elements related to the context, such as various materials, history, knowledge and museum methods. The installation is not only variable, but is also a ‘work in progress’. In order to be able to present the work in different spaces in the future without the help of the artist herself, from early July to mid-September a researcher will carry out tests in one of the museum’s rooms. Several possible arrangements of the work will be tried out and documented.
