Francisca García & Mario Navarro in conversation with Philippe Van Cauteren on Unearthed Conversation

26 04 02 SMAK OPENING 43

Following their new exhibition 'Unearthed Conversation' at S.M.A.K., Chilean artists Francisca García and Mario Navarro engaged in a conversation with Philippe Van Cauteren—artistic director and curator of the exhibition—about the layering of the Atacama Desert, sources of inspiration, and the common thread running through the various works on display.

In 'Unearthed Conversation', Chilean artists Francisca García and Mario Navarro focus on the Atacama Desert at the mouth of the Loa River in northern Chile. This landscape is shaped by diverse narratives: archaeological finds from the ancient Chango culture, similarities to the Martian landscape, the presence of the world's largest telescopes, and the scars left by the Pinochet dictatorship.

In the run-up to the exhibition opening, both artists joined Philippe Van Cauteren to delve deeper into the various complex themes presented in the show. What inspired them? How do they bring together past, present, and future? And what do they hope the visitor ultimately takes away?
