Since 2013, Cultural Center Strombeek and S.M.A.K. Ghent are running the joint exhibition program Museum Culture Strombeek/Ghent. In this framework Bohemian Grove is a project by the American artist John Knight (1945, lives in Los Angeles, works in situ) at the Cultural Center Strombeek. It takes its name of a work initially developed for the Berlin Galerie Neu and installed in situ at its project space MD72 in 2013. It was reconfigured at the Barbara Gladstone Gallery New York in 2014. Simultaneously, Treize à la douzaine, a work initially produced for the Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR) in 1991, is installed at S.M.A.K. Ghent.
John Knight lives in Los Angeles and works in situ. Recent solo exhibitions include Cabinet, London (2016); Redcat, Los Angeles (2016); Greene Naftali Gallery, New York (2015); Art Institute of Chicago (2015); Cabinet Gallery at Fitzpatrick-Leland House, Los Angeles (2014); Portikus, Frankfurt (2013); and Espai d’art contemporani de Castelló, Castellón (2008).
Museumcultuur Strombeek/Ghent
Since January 2013 the Cultural Centre Strombeek works together with the S.M.A.K. in Ghent on a structural basis. Every year, in the course of four consecutive years, the Cultural Centre, under the heading Museum Culture Strombeek/Ghent, will present two projects (a triptych in spring and a diptych in autumn), focusing on a certain theme. For these projects, the Cultural Centre Strombeek will use the collection of the S.M.A.K. —which comprises more than 2,000 works and spans a period of circa sixty years—as well as works from private collections and new works made for the occasion.
Museumcultuur Strombeek/Ghent is a unique interregional joint venture that aims to bring a new public in contact with the recent history of art, on the basis of the rich collection of the S.M.A.K. Museumcultuur Strombeek/Ghent is a concept of the Cultural Centre Strombeek. The development and organization of the project take place in close cooperation with the S.M.A.K. Ghent.
