How can S.M.A.K., in the future, permanently present 500 works from the collection? How can a museum be embedded in an urban environment? Can a future plan for S.M.A.K. act as a lever for the Citadel Park? Or what could a bipolar museum in a multipolar Citadel Park mean?
These and many other questions were asked during the (online) presentation of ‘Le Musée et son Double’ on Monday 30 November 2020.
From 2 February 2021 onwards, we will be showing the museum model on Richard Venlet's artwork 'Museum for a Small City'. This model is a representation of a possible future for S.M.A.K.
We invite you to look at this model and help us think about what a bigger and better museum could or should look like. You can share your opinion via nieuwmuseum@smak.be.
Conversation about a future for S.M.A.K. by Philippe Van Cauteren, Peter Swinnen and Berlinde De Bruyckere
Publication – evening discussion – architectural concept model
Over the past year, S.M.A.K. and the architectural firm CRIT. have been engaged in a dialogue, the result of which is an architectural model, a publication and an evening discussion. The aim of this triptych is to explore the possibilities for the future of the museum and to create space for a qualitative long-term public discussion.
- The publication 'Le Musée et son Double' - including contributions by Iwona Blazwick, Asli Çiçek, Shervin Kianersi Haghighi, David Peleman and Peter Swinnen/CRIT. is now for sale in the bookshop.
- From February 2021 the architectural model will be displayed in the museum as part of 'Museum for a Small City/Rebuild by Richard Venlet'.

This letter clearly describes the need for a new museum building.
