Modern alchemist Joris Van de Moortel (b. 1983, Oostakker-Lourdes; lives and works in Hoboken) pushes the boundaries of his spectrum with a new solo exhibition. In HELL ON EARTH, in search of PUR, NUR and FUR, a voyage of discovery unfolds from 5 October 2024 to 2 March 2025 at S.M.A.K. A next stage of the pilgrimage that previously stopped at De Warande.
For more than 15 years, Joris Van de Moortel has been building a multidisciplinary oeuvre that crosses borders and defies conventions. His studio is like a laboratory of the imagination, where he experiments with materials and ideas like a modern alchemist. While the traditional alchemist sought eternal life and gold, Van de Moortel seems to be striving for a different treasure: a way through the chaos of a rapidly changing world. At the same time, he remains true to the essence of art, knowledge and imagination.
In his musical performances, sculptures and paintings as well as in his films and tarot cards, you will find an abundance of puzzles, puns, art-historical references. A deep-seated creative urge characterises his visual language. For Van de Moortel, this chaotic aesthetic is necessary for a critical discussion of the complex relationships between nature, culture, art, religion and contemporary society.
On the occasion of his exhibition HELL ON EARTH, in search of PUR, NUR and FUR , the artist made the edition for the Friends of S.M.A.K. It is a 1:1 copy of the original drawing (design) of the large glass windows in his installation in the exhibition at S.M.A.K., printed on mirrored aluminium.
