Open Call | New perspectives on contemporary art collections in Flanders

In 2023, Z33, in collaboration with M HKA, M Leuven, Mu.ZEE, and S.M.A.K., organized the exhibition This Is Us. The exhibition brought together works from the contemporary art collections of the various museums and placed them in dialogue with new creations by emerging artists active in Belgium. In this way, we opened up new perspectives on the collections and made them accessible to a new audience in Limburg, a region without a museum of contemporary art.

Starting in 2028, Z33 and these museums will continue this collaboration. Each year, we will present an exhibition in which a selection of works from the museum collections will engage in a dialogue with new artistic interventions or commissioned works. To this end, we will invite a different guest curator each year. The first edition will take place in September 2028.

Call for Proposals

Z33 is seeking a curator, artist, or team with a strong concept for an exhibition in which works from the contemporary art collections of M HKA, M Leuven, Mu.ZEE, and S.M.A.K. are explored through the lens of a current artistic or social issue or theme.

The exhibition will place these works in dialogue with up to two new artistic interventions or commissioned creations, for which Z33 has allocated a production budget. We are seeking proposals that approach the collections from a different perspective than the collection-displays in these museums themselves, and we are expressly open to curatorial and artistic experiments, ranging from artistic interventions to innovative forms of presentation. The exhibition invites visitors to draw connections based on current artistic or social issues and to explore the significance these collections can hold today.

In doing so, we aim to create an accessible and thought-provoking narrative for both experienced art lovers and visitors who are less familiar with contemporary art.
