From 7 March 2020, you can become better acquainted with Kris Martin’s eloquent oeuvre in the first retrospective of his work to be staged in Belgium. Departing from objects, he creates sculptures that raise questions about concepts such as transience, identity and death, themes that have long traversed art history.
In Belgium, Martin is best known for his sculpture ‘Altar’, which is now on view in Ostend and outside St. Bavo’s Cathedral. He also makes a subtle nod to Van Eyck’s work. His ‘Eve and Adam’ (2017), for example, will make you look differently at the two figures from ‘The Ghent Altarpiece’ (1432).
