One of the most talked-about artworks from the exhibition Chambres d'Amis – 'Le Décor et son Double' by Daniel Buren – is currently being installed in our museum galleries for the exhibition Chambres d'Amis turns 40 at S.M.A.K.
With this piece, Buren challenged the exhibition's core concept of displaying art in private homes rather than a museum. He chose to create a double for the museum, in addition to his installation in the guest room of art collectors Annick and Anton Herbert. In 2011, S.M.A.K. was able to recreate the museum component with the support of the Flemish Community and the City of Ghent. As a result, 'Le Décor et son Double' represents a unique collaboration between three types of owners: private collectors, a museum, and the government.
