The volunteers regularly visit locations in Dunkirk and Calais and help the people there with food, clean clothes and other small basic needs such as soap and shampoo.
The work they do asks a lot of them and is also emotionally draining. In these places, people live in wretched conditions and are constantly hounded by the authorities. The lack of a realistic, positive and humanitarian policy contributes to the hopeless atmosphere of fear and aggression. The functioning of vzw Humain is absolutely not self-evident and there is still a need for support and new volunteers.
In December 2019, S.M.A.K. organised a night programme together with Amarant to raise money for vzw Humain. In addition, together with LUCA School of Arts Campus Ghent, we organised a meeting to find new volunteers. In December, a group of volunteers from LUCA joined vzw Humain on a trip to Dunkirk and Calais.
Not only does vzw Humain want to support the people directly, but it also hopes to make a difference in the public opinion and tries to remove prejudices that exist about refugees.
