Following the publication of the monograph The End Is Never Near, Melanie Deboutte talks to Jan Van Imschoot. In 2023, S.M.A.K. will present an exhibition by this artist.

The End Is Never Near presents the first comprehensive survey of the oeuvre of Belgian painter Jan Van Imschoot (b. 1963, Ghent, Belgium). His work is built around historical themes from literature and art history, bridging to predecessors such as Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Goya, Manet, and others. The artist engages in an ongoing dialogue with the past, often focusing, with a dose of cynicism, on phenomena or figures on the margins of contemporary society.

More than 200 works by Jan Van Imschoot are included in this monograph, which contains in-depth essays by Selen Ansen, Dieter Roelstraete, Alain Tapié and Philippe Van Cauteren, as well as an extensive conversation between the artist and Hendrik Folkerts.
