S.M.A.K. is organising special workshops for people with dementia and their carers, in collaboration with Bie Hinnekint from The courage to grow old.

Contemporary art makes a valuable contribution to strengthening the bond between people with dementia and their immediate environment. The museum is a safe, free space in which the artworks offer support.

People with dementia and their carers take part in this workshop, which focuses on experiencing a work of art together. Afterwards, the participants work together to create a poetic translation of their impressions.

"The situation of people with dementia is always defined in terms of the loss of skills; the aspect of memory failure in particular is a recurring theme. The Courage to Grow Old aims to offer a different perspective: dementia is a process of consciousness involution. This reversal process, which is seen as a loss for those around them, deserves our full attention and should be viewed directly, like a work of art, and not necessarily “understood”. Experiencing art together offers a different insight into dementia." (Bie Hinnekint)

The workshop will focus on a number of works from the exhibition. People with dementia are invited to respond to the work. For carers, the workshop is an opportunity to experience unexpected sides of their partner.
