Double bassist Nils Vermeulen starts tour at S.M.A.K.
Nils Vermeulen is a Belgian double bass player, artistic researcher attached to KASK and studied instrument making. His music ranges from free improvisation to jazz and contemporary classical music, in groups such as Kabas and Jukwaa. Vermeulen is an active member of Nemo ensemble and the musician collective Troika. He has already performed with Paul Lytton, Seppe Gebruers, William Parker, John Dikeman, Luis Vicente, and many others.
The sound of the double bass is Vermeulen's biggest variable. The strings he uses are 'Tempera' strings by Gerold Genssler, inspired by traditional gut strings. These strings have a low tension to allow the instrument to resonate more freely. In this way, he explores a whole range of techniques, proportions and tones.
Every academic year, S.M.A.K., Ghent University and Curatorial Studies at KASK & Conservatory School of Arts jointly organise the Curatorial Lectures series. This year, with the series 'The Curated Institution', we are taking a broad look at the notion of curating as a form of institutional leadership. How can an institution be curated and what can curators do to change, adjust or rethink institutional structures from an artistic point of view? On 4 May, we welcome Cosmin Costinas (1982, Romania). He is co-artistic director of the 24th Sydney Biennale (2024) and co-curator of the Romanian pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022).
M I M I brings a sound performance at 21:00 in 'The Temple' by Grace Ndiritu. Expect a mix of electronic sounds, spoken word, Tibetan pan and bells. Lay back and immerse yourself in this sound bath.
Maria Muehombo, known as M I M I, is an interdisciplinary artist, curator and sound performer from Brussels. With her sound bath on Late Thursday, she activates Grace Ndiritu's 'The Temple', a spiritual space for encounter, transition and healing.
S.M.A.K. is proud to be the first museum in Belgium to present a solo exhibition by internationally renowned artist Haegue Yang. During Late Thursday, discover how this South Korean artist transforms S.M.A.K.'s largest gallery into a total atmosphere.

Aymeric De Tapol + Eric Thielemans
Aymericic de Tapol is a musician, field recordist and sound-engineer for film, art video, documentary, radio, dance performances and more. His electronic music is surrounded by mystery. He has a love for haunting drones, minimal ambient and proto techno pulses.
Drummer-philosopher Eric Thielemans has worked his way into his own musical realms through jazz drums and free improvisation. He explores consciousness through music and challenges the boundaries of percussion.
