From 14 March, you can enjoy the exhibition 'Oasem' in Room 1, featuring artworks created by residents of De Liberteyt residential care centre in Wondelgem. From visual art, video and dance to 'elderly techno', there is clearly no age on creativity.
The residents of De Liberteyt have been able to (re)discover their talents for two years thanks to Studio X-pressief, the residential care home's creative workshop. This has already led to many remarkable projects. In 2022, for instance, there was a Fair Fashion fashion show in De Centrale, in which seniors gave new life to old wedding dresses on the catwalk. Or the colourful expo 'Butterfly me' in the residential care centre itself.
This time, the residents are palming Room 1 of the S.M.A.K. with the free expo 'Oasem', referring in Ghent to breath, in English to 'awesome'. Visitors can enjoy visual art and video work, among other things. There will also be 'elderly techno' in the Stoofkot (a nod to the international DJ sets in the 'boiler room'), there will be dance workshops, and and those who want to can sit in a seat with a resident in search of life wisdom.
'There is no age on creativity! Come to the S.M.A.K. and enjoy the artworks of the residents of De Liberteyt, come dance to senior citizens' techno and sniff some more life wisdom.' Rudy Coddens, alderman for senior citizens policy
Every day, residents of De Liberteyt are present, such as Betty (87) and Jenny (90), who help show visitors around. Even the attendant on duty is a resident: Emilienne (86), who previously worked in Ghent museums in her professional life.
