As part of an ongoing collaboration with S.M.A.K. and WECANDANCE, The Constant Now presents INTERWOVEN—a free two-day collage workshop led by artist and founder of Black Visual Grammar, Isaiah Lopaz.
Interwoven is a free 2-day collage workshop for BIPOC participants, led by artist, writer and archivist Isaiah Lopaz. The collages will be transformed into flags and will be part of the WECANDANCE music festival in Zeebrugge. This project is part of an ongoing collaboration between The Constant Now, S.M.A.K. and WECANDANCE, supported by Flanders.
Lopaz is the creator of Black Visual Grammar, a generative, mobile archive that uses collage to document Black perspectives through workshops and public installations—previously presented at Theater Rotterdam, Schauspiel Dortmund and DAAD Galerie in Berlin.
At S.M.A.K., 20 participants will explore the hidden, coded meanings of textiles and regalia, and work on artworks that move between past, present and future. Starting with denim and movement as both material and metaphor, the workshop reflects on how worn symbols carry meaning in everyday life and rituals. Inspired by dance and choreography, participants will work with rhythm, improvisation and composition—promoting reflection, dialogue and collaboration.
When?
Workshop at S.M.A.K.: 14–15 June 2025, 11:00–17:00
Flags at WECANDANCE: 15–17 August 2025
Day 1
Create personal collages using a curated archive of nearly 1,000 images or your own materials. These ‘visual solos’ explore how symbols, textiles and style connect with identity and history.
Day 2
Share one of your collages with the group. These individual works will become the starting point for a collective image choreography—woven together into a larger composition rooted in care, movement and imagination.
The final works will be photographed and transformed into flags, which will be on display at WECANDANCE 2025, where the theme Denim Dancers reflects the focus on cultural memory, embodiment and collective storytelling.
