Luciano Fabro

Year and place of birth: 1936, Turin, Italy Date of death: 2007

Luciano Fabro’s oeuvre can be associated with the arte povera group, which formed in Italy in the late 1960s and was active mainly in the 1970s. ‘Arte povera’ literally means ‘poor art’, a reference to the use of ‘poor’, ordinary, not very ‘artistic’ materials. But although he is seen as an arte povera artist, Fabro also made frequent use of precious and expensive materials, to which he was attracted by their sensual and poetic power. In many of his works the artist makes a meaningful connection between luxurious and ordinary materials.
