A Curatorial Perspective on Conservation

During the last week of February, 18 students from the Curatorial Studies program at KASK followed in an intensive course week at S.M.A.K., led by Prof. Dr. Sanneke Stigter (University of Amsterdam), with lectures on the development of contemporary art conservation and how it relates to curating, along with hands-on experience.

As part of the program, all students spent a full day on-site, each assigned a newly acquired artwork to assess. Under the guidance of S.M.A.K.'s conservation team—Claudia, Carla, and Jana—they learned how to create condition reports, covering key aspects such as documentation through photography, packaging requirements, transportation, and storage considerations.

Through this exercise, they engaged closely with various types of contemporary art, gaining valuable insight into museum operations and the complexities of conservation strategies.
