Ghent B&Bs enjoy art from S.M.A.K. all summer long

This summer, an artwork from S.M.A.K. is on display in eight Ghent B&Bs. Following in the footsteps of the groundbreaking 1986 exhibition 'Chambres d’Amis', we are once again bringing contemporary art to surprising locations across the city.

In March, we launched a call for applications from Ghent B&Bs. From the submissions, eight B&Bs were selected: Bigsleep in Macharius-Heirnis, Lieven Bauwens in the station area, Villa Emma in Sint-Amandsberg, Marcel de Gand in Mariakerke, Maaltebrug near Maaltebruggepark, Fred & Breakfast along the Coupure, SoGo Guesthouse in the city center, and Atlas B&B at the Prinsenhof.

Based on a questionnaire, the museum team looked for the most suitable combination of guesthouse and artwork from the collection, ensuring that each B&B displays a work that matches the atmosphere and identity of the location. Guests thus get the chance to discover contemporary art in a surprising way, featuring works by artists such as Lawrence Weiner, Werner Mannaers, Rosemarie Trockel, and François Morellet.

This project is part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Chambres d’Amis and the major exhibition currently on display at the museum. The exhibition runs until January 10, 2027, and reflects on the iconic expo with which Jan Hoet put Ghent on the international map as a city of art in 1986.
