Lions versus Eagles

NL - Phillips schilderde ‘Lions versus Eagles’ in het jaar waarin hij afstudeerde aan het Londense Royal College of Art. In datzelfde jaar vertrok de kunstenaar met een beurs naar de V.S. waar hij twee jaar woonde, werkte en een grote rondreis maakte met zijn boezemvriend, de Britse popartkunstenaar Allen Jones. De Amerikaanse beeldcultuur van de ‘golden sixties’ was de directe inspiratiebron voor de motieven op dit schilderij: de sterren van de Amerikaanse vlag en de Walk of Fame in Hollywood, en trommelremmen die symbool stonden voor de destijds bloeiende auto-industrie in de V.S. De adelaar en de leeuwen zijn mogelijk ook geïnspireerd op de logo’s van twee ‘American football’-teams. Er is een contrast tussen de onderste helft van het schilderij, die ingesnoerd lijkt door zwarte lijnen en witte balken, en de bovenste helft, die over de beeldrand heen lijkt door te lopen. Dit zorgt voor een optisch effect dat aan een flipperkast doet denken, een van Phillips’ geliefde motieven.

In the same year, the artist went on a scholarship to the US, where he lived, worked and toured for two years together with his bosom friend, the British pop artist Allen Jones. The American visual culture of the 'golden sixties' became the direct source of inspiration for the motifs in this paintings: the stars of the American flag and the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, along with drum brakes that symbolised the then flourishing car industry in the USA. The eagle and lions may also have been inspired by the logos of two 'American football' teams. There is a contrast between the lower half of the painting, which seems to be constrained by black lines and white bars, and the upper half, which seems to extend beyond the edge of the picture. This creates an optical effect reminiscent of a pinball machine, one of Phillips' favourite motifs.

Cette même année, l’artiste est parti aux États-Unis grâce à une bourse d’études et y a vécu et travaillé pendant deux ans. Il y a aussi effectué un grand voyage à travers le pays avec son ami intime, l’artiste pop britannique Allen Jones. La culture visuelle états-unienne des golden sixties a été la source d’inspiration directe des motifs de ce tableau : les étoiles du drapeau américain et du Walk of Fame à Hollywood, ainsi que les freins à tambour qui symbolisent l’industrie automobile alors florissante aux États-Unis. L’aigle et les lions renvoient peut-être aux logos de deux équipes de football américain. On observe un contraste entre la moitié inférieure du tableau, qui semble étranglée par des lignes noires et des bandes blanches, et la moitié supérieure, qui semble s’étendre au-delà du bord de l’image. Cela crée un effet optique qui rappelle un flipper, l’un des motifs favoris de Phillips.
