Acid Bath

NL – ‘Acid Bath’ (2019) is typerend voor het ‘Ballenesque’ universum, een term die men algauw op Roger Ballens oeuvre plakte en die als een soort verzamelnaam fungeert voor artistieke invloeden, waaronder absurdistisch theater, outsider art, het surreële en het groteske. ‘Acid Bath’ toont een lugubere badkamerscène waarin een vrouwenlichaam, met de benen gehuld in panty’s, opgelost lijkt te worden in een vuile, borrelende badkuip. Het tafereel lijkt enerzijds recht uit een afschuwelijke nachtmerrie geplukt, maar vertoont anderzijds een macaber-absurde humor, die dit tafereel, dat de marginaliteit van het menselijke onderbewuste verbeeldt, voor ons behapbaar houdt. Het werk werd in 2020 door de kunstenaar aan S.M.A.K. geschonken naar aanleiding van zijn tentoonstelling ‘The Theatre of the Ballenesque’ in 2019 in de Centrale voor Hedendaagse Kunst in Brussel.

ENG – ‘Acid Bath’ (2019) is typical of the ‘Ballenesque’ universe, a term that was soon used to label Roger Ballen’s work. It functions as a kind of catch-all for the artistic influences in his oeuvre, such as absurdist theatre, outsider art, the surreal and the grotesque. ‘Acid Bath’ depicts a sinister bathroom scene in which a female body, with the legs dressed in tights, looks as if it is being dissolved in a grimy, frothing bathtub. The scene seems to have been plucked from a gruesome nightmare on the one hand, but on the other seems to betray a macabre and absurdist sense of humour. This ensures that the scene, which depicts the marginality of the human subconscious, remains palatable for us. The work was donated to the S.M.A.K. by the artist in 2020 upon the occasion of his exhibition ‘The Theatre of the Ballenesque’ at the Centrale for Contemporary Art in Brussels in 2019.

FR – ‘Acid Bath’ (2019) est typique de l’univers ‘Ballenesque’, un terme que l’on n’a pas tardé à coller à l’œuvre de Ballen pour désigner un ensemble d’influences artistiques comme le théâtre absurde, l’outsider art, le surréalisme et le grotesque. Une scène de salle de bain lugubre, avec un corps féminin, portant des pantys, qui semble se dissoudre dans une baignoire crasseuse contenant un liquide bouillonnant. La scène a l’air tout droit sortie d’un horrible cauchemar, mais en même temps elle affiche un humour macabre absurde qui représente la marginalité du subconscient humain et rend la scène digeste pour nous. L’œuvre a été offerte par l’artiste au S.M.A.K. en 2020, à l’occasion de son exposition ‘The Theatre of the Ballenesque’ en 2019 à la Centrale d’art contemporain à Bruxelles.
