NL - Na zijn opleiding in Londen ontwikkelde Hockney al snel een persoonlijke, ogenschijnlijk moeiteloze stijl. In veel schilderijen uit deze vroege periode combineerde de kunstenaar abstracte composities met figuratieve elementen. Vaak integreerde hij er ook tekstfragmenten in ter ondersteuning van het beeld. In dit schilderij contrasteert de schijnbare driedimensionaliteit van de kasteelarchitectuur met de vlakheid van de rest van de compositie. Zo krijgen we de indruk dat de centrale figuur zich in een decor bevindt. De titel van het werk in combinatie met het kasteel op de achtergrond lijkt te verwijzen naar de zegswijze ‘An Englishman’s home is his castle’, waardoor we het schilderij kunnen lezen als een sociale satire.

ENG - After his tutelage in London, Hockney quickly developed a personal, seemingly effortless style. In many of his early paintings, the artist combined abstract compositions with figurative elements. Often he also integrated fragments of text to underpin the image. In this painting the apparent three-dimensionality of the castle architecture contrasts with the flatness of the remainder of the composition. This gives us the impression that the central figure is positioned in a film or theatre setting. The title of the work, in combination with the castle in the background, seems to allude to the saying 'An Englishman's home is his castle', prompting us to interpret the painting as social satire.

FR - Après avoir suivi une formation à Londres, Hockney développa assez rapidement un style personnel, apparemment sans effort. De nombreuses peintures de cette première période sont une combinaison entre des compositions abstraites et des éléments figuratifs. Il intégrait aussi souvent des fragments de textes à l’appui de l’image. Dans cette peinture, la tri-dimensionnalité apparente de l’architecture du château contraste avec la planéité du reste de la composition. Ainsi, nous avons l’impression que le personnage central se trouve dans un décor. Le titre de l’oeuvre, combiné au château en arrière-plan, semble renvoyer à la formule ‘An Englishman’s home is his castle’, de sorte que nous pouvons lire la peinture comme une satire de la société.
