World Refugee Day | Under the olive trees of Lesbos

The United Nations has declared 20 June International Day of Refugees. The fate of refugees is in the spotlight worldwide. S.M.A.K. has a special evening programme.

In May 2018, poet Inge Braeckman spent a week as a volunteer in various Greek reception camps for asylum seekers. This trip resulted in a new series of poems. Braeckman presents this collection in S.M.A.K. She shares her experiences about the trip with the audience and reads some of her poems.

Ann Vermeulen of Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen is also coming to S.M.A.K. She shows the documentary about the Road Of Change project. During the spring break, the organisation took 14 young people and 6 teachers on a trip through Europe, visiting several refugee camps along the borders of Europe. You can find more of their activities via this link.

Finally, in the entrance hall, we display the results of artworks created during workshops at the Red Cross Reception Centre for asylum seekers in Eeklo. Since December 2016, LUCA students led by Goele Dewanckel have been organising workshops there for asylum seekers in Eeklo. The students work out an artistic project together with children and adults in a creative workshop. This fits in with the S.M.A.K. Moves programme.
