Colonie 21 is the latest project in the joint venture by the S.M.A.K. and the local authorities of Bredene.
After the exhibitions Grasduinen 01 and 02, a programme of artists in residence is being launched. In autumn and winter 2005 several artists selected by the SMAK will each stay and work in Bredene for four weeks.
The artists’ temporary studio will be in a lifeguards hut in the inspiring environment of sea, beach and dunes. Talks and/or workshops will be given in conjunction with each residence, but the possibilities also include visits to schools. Each artist’s stay will be rounded off with a public encounter. The artists will also take part in an exhibition at the Staf Versluys Meeting and Event Centre starting on 6th January. The first artist of this series is Steve Schepens. This young artist (°1979, lives and works in Ghent) bases his works on the problems of the image. Recognising the problem in order to then be able to solve it, is not only the slogan of the Anonymous Alcoholics, this conception is also the base of Schepens’ work. He gives expression to the thematic of his work by means of in situ installations, live and video installations. Each new project or exhibition is embedded in its current total concept HORROR that started in 2003 at the time of its participation in the group exhibition Fast Forward in the St.Kwintens Chapel in Ghent. Later followed by the participation to Entertain_Us (Salons of Fine Arts, St.-Niklaas), the (K-raa-k)³ Festival (Art Center Belgium, Hasselt) and theTime Festival on St.-Baafs square in Ghent.
