Together with Symfoon, S.M.A.K. and BuSO Sint-Rafaël Gent, arts organisation aifoon is launching a 3-part podcast series with, among others, Philippe Van Cauteren (S.M.A.K.), Stijn Dickel (aifoon) and Sepideh Sedaghatnia (Sommelier of the Year 2014 by Gault & Millau) on sound, art, sensuality and language.

Popcorn popping against the pan, rain leaking from a gutter, empty cans rattling in the wind ...

Try to put a sound into words and you soon fall back on descriptions and metaphors. There is very little vocabulary to really communicate about sound. Why is that? And above all: what can we do about it? These are the central questions that six experts, each with their own expertise, tackle in the new three-part podcast 'Geluidenatlas'.

In three short episodes interviewer Thomas Smolders discusses sound, sense and language with six experts, drawing on their personal knowledge and experience.

  • Stijn Dickel (artistic leader aifoon) about the artistic possibilities of sound, listening and listening art.
  • Ria Decoopman (director Symfoon / Zicht-op-Cultuur) about the importance of sound for the visually impaired and how sighted people are "blind" in listening.
  • Philippe Van Cauteren (artistic director S.M.A.K.) about how it is an art to observe precisely and to find words to talk about art.
  • Frederik Van de Moortel (musician / sound designer) about how sound gives extra meaning to image and film.
  • Kurt Feyaerts (Prof. Linguistics KU Leuven) about the possibilities of language and sound symbolism.
  • Sepideh Sedaghatnia (sommelier): about linking words to sensory experiences like taste, smell, sound.
