Gentle Figures | Beautiful Friends is an initiative from draughtswoman and LUCA tutor Goele Dewanckel. A group of Illustration students from LUCA School of Arts Campus in Ghent are working on a project around ‘the portrait’ for two years. Also involved are artists from Globe Aroma, an open art house in Brussels that welcomes newcomers for artistic and cultural exchange. It provides a low-threshold artistic refuge with dialogue, collaboration, networking, creation and experience at its core.
The students and artists visit a range of exhibitions at S.M.A.K. together and meet up in the school’s studios or at Globe Aroma. During these gatherings, the participants get to know one another better whilst drawing. Dozens of surprising portraits have emerged from these encounters. A publication featuring the drawings entitled Gentle Figures | Beautiful Friends will appear in March.
The exhibition runs in the S.M.A.K. Pavillion between 8 February 2020 and 10 May 2020.
