R 74-17

NL – ‘R 74-17’ is een schoolvoorbeeld van Jan Schoonhovens witte, rastervormige reliëfs, waarmee hij vanaf 1967 internationaal bekend werd. De titel is volkomen in de geest van de Nul-beweging, die kunst als een volkomen objectieve, op zichzelf staande werkelijkheid bekeek. Hij slaat enkel en alleen op het object dat hij vertegenwoordigt: de ‘R’ verwijst naar ‘Reliëf’, 74 naar het jaartal waarin het werk werd gemaakt, en 17 naar het chronologische nummer. De meeste van Schoonhovens reliëfs werden gemaakt van stukjes ribkarton, opstaand gemonteerd op een triplexachtergrond, vervolgens bekleefd met papier en ten slotte witgeschilderd. Ondanks hun zakelijke, objectieve en rationele karakter bezitten de reliëfs ook een lyrische visuele poëzie. Die zit vervat in het subtiele clair-obscur dat ze – afhankelijk van het omgevingslicht en los van hun fysieke driedimensionaliteit – een mentale en retinale dieptewerking meegeeft. Ze zijn een uiting van een harmonische, proportionele ordening, die losstaat van elke verstoring uit de realiteit en die zich aandient als een volkomen op zichzelf staand, bijna utopisch esthetisch geheel.

ENG – ‘R 74-17’ is a textbook example of the white, grid-shaped reliefs that propelled Jan Schoonhoven to international acclaim from 1967 onwards. The title is entirely in the spirit of the Nul movement, which viewed art as an utterly objective, stand-alone reality. ‘R 74-17’ refers solely to the object itself: the ‘R’ alludes to ‘Relief’, 74 to the year in which the work was created, and 17 to the chronological sequence. The majority of Schoonhoven’s reliefs were fashioned from pieces of corrugated cardboard, mounted upright on a triplex background, then coated with paper and finally painted white. Despite their businesslike, objective and rational character, the reliefs also have a lyrical visual poetry. This is embodied in the subtle chiaroscuro that lends them a mental and retinal depth – depending upon the ambient light and irrespective of their physical three-dimensionality. They are an expression of a harmonious, proportional arrangement which is independent of any disruption by reality, and which comes across as a stand-alone, almost utopian, aesthetic whole.

FR – ‘R 74-17’ est un exemple classique des reliefs blancs en forme de grille de Jan Schoonhoven, qui lui ont valu une renommée internationale à partir de 1967. Le titre est tout à fait dans l'esprit du mouvement Zéro, qui considérait l'art comme une réalité totalement objective et autonome. Il se réfère uniquement à l'objet qu'il représente : le ‘R’ fait référence à ‘Relief’, 74 à l'année de réalisation de l'œuvre, et 17 au numéro chronologique. La plupart des reliefs de Schoonhoven étaient réalisés à partir de morceaux de carton nervuré, montés debout sur un fond en contreplaqué, puis recouverts de papier et enfin peints en blanc. Malgré leur caractère factuel, objectif et rationnel, les reliefs possèdent également une poésie visuelle lyrique. Elle est contenue dans le subtil clair-obscur qui leur confère - en fonction de la lumière ambiante et en dehors de leur tridimensionnalité physique - un effet de profondeur mentale et rétinienne. Ils sont l'expression d'un arrangement harmonieux et proportionnel, détaché de toute perturbation de la réalité et se présentant comme une esthétique complètement autonome, presque utopique.
