NL – De reeks ‘Fluffing the Pillows’ bestaat uit abstracties van maritieme gebruiksvoorwerpen. Deze installatie, die tot de reeks behoort, omvat ‘Silos’, een ‘Gurney’ en een ‘Mooring’. De ‘Silos’ delen hun naam met opslagplekken voor bulk- of stortgoederen zoals graan of zand. Hun schijnbaar zachte maar sterke vormen maakte Baghramian uit zeildoek, rubber en imitatieleder. De ‘Gurney’, de verchroomde buis, dient om de vormloze zakken te ondersteunen bij verplaatsingen. ‘Gurney’ betekent ‘draagberrie’. De ‘Mooring’ – letterlijk ‘ligplaats’ – verwijst naar de haken en bolders waaraan schepen zich bij het aanmeren vastleggen. De vorm is afgeleid van die van havenkraanhaken. De losse opstelling van de sculpturen in de ruimte doet denken aan aanspoelsels op een strand. Ze stelt vragen bij de impact van de architectuur van tentoonstellingsplekken op de manier waarop we naar kunst kijken en meer algemeen ook bij hoe musea de waarde van kunst mee bepalen.
ENG – The ‘Fluffing the Pillows’ series consists of abstractions of maritime utility objects. This installation, which is one of this series, includes ‘Silos’, a ‘Gurney’ and a ‘Mooring’. The ‘Silos’ share their name with the storage containers for bulk goods such as grain and sand. Baghramian made their seemingly soft but strong shape out of canvas, rubber and imitation leather. The ‘Gurney’, a chrome-plated tube, is used to support shapeless sacks when they are transported. A ‘Gurney’ is a stretcher. The ‘Mooring’ refers to the hooks and bollards to which ships are tied when they moor. The shape derives from that of the hooks on harbour cranes. The casual arrangement of the sculptures in the room reminds us of things washed up on a beach. Baghramian raises questions about the impact of the architecture of exhibition spaces on the way we look at art and, more generally, about the way museums also determine the value of art.
FR - La série ‘Fluffing the Pillows’ se compose d’abstractions d’objets courants maritimes. Cette installation, qui fait partie de la série, comporte des ‘Silos’, un ‘Gurney’ et un ‘Mooring’. Les ‘Silos’ partagent leur nom avec des entrepôts pour des marchandises en vrac, comme des céréales ou du sable. Baghramian a fabriqué leurs formes apparemment douces mais solides avec de la toile à voile, du caoutchouc et du similicuir. Le ‘Gurney’, le tuyau chromé, sert à soutenir les sacs informes lors de déplacements. ‘Gurney’ signifie ‘civière’. Le ‘Mooring’ – littéralement ‘lieu de mouillage’ – évoque les crochets et les bittes auxquels les bateaux sont fixés à l’amarrage. La forme est détournée des crochets de grue dans les ports. La disposition libre des sculptures dans l’espace fait songer à des alluvions sur la plage. Elle s’interroge à propos de l’impact de l’architecture de lieux d’exposition sur la manière dont nous percevons l’art et, plus généralement, aussi sur la façon dont les musées définissent aussi la valeur de l’art.
