Galago Crassicaudata

NL - ‘Galago Crassicaudata’ (2005) kadert algemeen in Meuris’ doorgedreven esthetische analyse rond classificatie en codering. Specifieker is deze installatie onderdeel van een werkenreeks rond diersoorten en de voorwaarden waaronder ze in een artificiële, gesloten biotoop kunnen verblijven. De kunstenaar geeft elk dier een verblijfplaats met specifieke afmetingen, in aangepaste materialen, met een sfeer die aanleunt bij zijn natuurlijke biotoop en een relatie met het publiek. Deze glazen kooi dient om de Galago Crassicaudata, een Zuidoost-Afrikaanse apensoort, tentoon te stellen. Alles is tot in de details uitgewerkt: van didactisch informatiebord over voederluik tot waterpartij. Alleen is er geen aap te bekennen. Zo kunnen we niet anders dan onze blik focussen op de architectuur van de kooi. Museum en zoo, twee ‘non-plaatsen’ die zijn ingericht in functie van het kijkcomfort van hun bezoekers, ontmoeten elkaar.

ENG - ‘Galago Crassicaudata’ (2005) broadly fits within Meuris’ far-reaching aesthetic analysis of classification and coding. More specifically, this installation is part of a series of works on animal species and the conditions under which they can remain in an artificial, closed biotope. The artist gives each animal a place to live with specific dimensions, in adapted materials, with an atmosphere that resembles its natural biotope and a relationship with the public. This glass cage is used to exhibit the Galago Crassicaudata, a species of Southeast African monkey. Everything has been worked out in detail: from a didactic information board to a feeding hatch and a place for water. However, there is no monkey to be seen. As a result, all we can do is focus our attention on the architecture of the cage. Museum and zoo, two ‘non-places’ that are organised around the viewing comfort of their visitors, meet each other.

FR - ‘Galago Crassicaudata’ (2005) s’inscrit de manière générale dans l’analyse esthétique approfondie de Meuris autour de la classification et du codage. De manière plus spécifique, cette installation fait partie d’une série d’œuvres sur les espèces animales et les conditions auxquelles elles peuvent séjourner dans un biotope artificiel et fermé. L’artiste donne à chaque animal un lieu de séjour aux dimensions spécifiques, dans des matériaux adaptés, dans une ambiance proche de son biotope naturel et en une relation avec le public. Cette cage en verre sert à exposer le Galago Crassicaudata, une espèce de primate d’Afrique du sud-est. Tout est conçu jusque dans les moindres détails: depuis le panneau d’information didactique jusqu’à la pièce d’eau en passant par le volet alimentation. Seulement, il n’y a pas de singe à voir. Nous ne pouvons que focaliser notre regard sur l’architecture de la cage. Le musée et le zoo, deux ‘non-lieux’ aménagés en fonction du confort visuel de leurs visiteurs, se rencontrent.
