Sans titre VI

NL - Vanaf 1978 creëert Bustamante zijn zogenaamde ‘Tableaux’, monumentale foto’s die focussen op verlaten verstedelijkte randgebieden. Begin jaren ’80 breidt zijn vocabularium gevoelig uit met schilderijen en sculptuur. Vanaf eind jaren ’80 oriënteert hij zich meer en meer op het sculpturale, hoewel fotografie een vaste factor blijft. Bustamante onderzoekt het begrip ‘plaats’ en dit zowel in de betekenis van ‘de plaats van het kunstwerk in een bepaalde ruimtelijke context’, als in de zin van ‘de plaats die het zou kunnen hebben in de blik, geest en psyché van de kijker’. ‘Sans titre VI’ (1989) is een object tussen abstracte minimalistische sculptuur en design. Het doet denken aan een wandkast en bestaat uit drie horizontale metalen constructies die visueel doorlopen in spiegelvlakken. In de virtuele spiegelbeelden verdubbelt het werk zich en verdwijnt het tegelijk in zichzelf. De kunstenaar doet een beroep op onze verbeelding en aan de hand van de spiegels ook letterlijk op onze fysieke aanwezigheid om dit onvatbare beeld te vervolmaken en te interpreteren.

ENG - In 1978, Bustamante began creating his so-called ‘Tableaux’: monumental photos that focus on deserted areas on the urban periphery. In the early 1980s, his vocabulary expanded significantly when he embraced painting and sculpture. From the late 1980s, his focus was increasingly on the sculptural, although photography continued to be a regular element. Bustamante explores the concept of ‘place’, both in the sense of ‘the place of the artwork in a certain spatial context’, and in the sense of ‘the place that it might occupy in the gaze, mind and psyche of the viewer’. ‘Sans titre VI’ (‘Untitled VI’) (1989) is an object that lies somewhere between an abstract minimalist sculpture and a design object. It is reminiscent of a wall-mounted cabinet and comprises three horizontal metal constructions, which visually carry through into reflective surfaces. In the virtual mirror images, the work doubles in size, whilst at the same time disappearing into itself. The artist relies upon both our imagination and, through the mirrors, our physical presence to complete and interpret this impervious image.

FR - A partir de 1978, Bustamante crée ses dits ‘Tableaux’, des photos monumentales qui se concentrent sur des banlieues urbanisées abandonnées. Au début des années ’80, son vocabulaire s’étend sensiblement avec des peintures et de la sculpture. A partir de la fin des années ’80, il s’oriente de plus en plus vers le sculptural, bien que la photographie reste un facteur permanent. Bustamante étudie le concept de ‘lieu’, aussi bien au sens du ‘lieu de l’œuvre d’art dans un contexte spatial défini’ qu’au sens du ‘lieu qu’elle pourrait avoir dans le regard, l’esprit et la psyché du spectateur’. ‘Sans titre VI’ (1989) est un objet entre la sculpture abstraite minimaliste et le design. Il évoque un placard et se compose de trois constructions horizontales qui s’enchaînent visuellement dans des surfaces miroir. L’œuvre double de volume dans les images reflétées virtuelles et elle disparaît en même temps en elle-même. En se servant des miroirs, l’artiste fait appel à notre imagination et aussi littéralement à notre présence physique, afin de parachever et d’interpréter cette image insaisissable.
